Is it OK to be blank? Have you ever been blank? Contrary to a fear that this might be a bad thing, I am thinking today that it could be a really good thing if we sort it out right.
My major in college was fine arts, oil and acrylic in particular, and mostly on large canvases. I always started out with a blank canvas. When I drew on paper, I always started out with a blank piece of paper. There were times that I was given someone else's canvases that they had painted on, and I have been known to use them. However, I painted them blank before I started. Starting with blank canvases is essential for bringing forth what ever vision the artist types want to bring forth. We always start with a blank canvas. It is an accepted part of creativity. But when we go blank or wake up blank, do we at all think that this is the necessary part of receiving new thoughts, new inspirations, new insights, or new creative endeavors. Not really. We usually fight this blank, fill it up with something normal and comforting. What would happen if we just stayed blank until God began to form and shape something in that empty space? Good things, I am sure. After all He is the creator, and even as artist plan to start with blank canvases, I believe God is looking for folks who will empty themselves out and become a blank canvas for Him to create good things with.
So as I think on this and in this way, being blank is a good thing, and a necessary thing if we are going to bring forth something new. Think about it. If I am constricted or governed only by what I already know, I am very limited to bringing forth something new. I will in some way just repeat was has previously been done and be very busy at it besides. Though this is not always a bad thing, when we are trying to see new things take place it can be a very in-the-way thing.
In case you can't tell. I started this blog being blank. But it has led to a dialog I would have never thought of if I hadn't been so blank. So now I am waiting to see what else will happen with my blankness. I am sure it won't stay that way as I wait upon the Lord, the author and finisher of my faith, who loves to work with blankness, and does some of His best works from that point. After all, creation started in the midst of what was without form and empty, we were are His creation created unto good works.
I hope we won't be disturbed in anyway next time we go blank, but can see it as a God opportunity to do something wonderful in and through our lives. We don't expect or believe we will be blank for very long when God is working with our lives. But when we are...
