White is the Color of Space?

I know this is not an original thought (not many are), but I was reminded of something that would be good for many of us to be reminded of as well today.  I was looking outside our home here in CT and after three days of 40 something much of the snow has melted.  However, there are still quite a few white places where the snow has not melted.  Today I am going to get on my yard tractor and drive down to our wood storage area, load up a trailer a couple of times and pull it up a hill to where I can bring in the fire wood for our wood stove.  I will not be moving through the white spaces because I will lose traction.  In fact, I will be making sure that all my outside chores today do not include white spaces.  One more interesting thing, is that as the white spaces disappear, there are many branches under them that are going to have to eventually be cleaned up out of the yard, but not today.  You see, there are white spaces there and now is not the time to do it.

So here is the not so original thought:  we all need white spaces in and around our lives.  We need some time and some places where we aren't wall the wall busy and project orientated.  Some of us have very little white space.   Some of us are going to have to clear some out of all the clutter that has accumulated in our business.  Some of us need to learn not to fill white spaces with something else just because there is more room to do it.  Empty white spaces are important.  Here are some of the reasons why.

  1. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
  2. God gives us space to rest, and when He does that is what we need to do
  3. We will wear ourselves out if we go, go, go
  4. White spaces are times of regeneration
  5. White spaces are not a waste of space
  6. Without white spaces the rest of life becomes cluttered and unfocused
  7. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and so are the stops
  8. White spaces are created on purpose

A not so original thought that needs some white space to fully appreciate.

white space

Andy Stanley has an excellent teaching series on this, called Take it to the Limit. It's all about borders, white, space and boundaries in our life, our finances, and our relationships. If you've every tried to read a page of text with no white space, no margins, no paragraphs, you'll understand how frustrating that is! But we often live our life packed to the edge of the page, trying to get so much done, but to be healthy and productive, we need that white space, that rest and relationship time. Our small group studied this a while back and it's something I think I will revisit again...
