Insights from a Power Outage

Yesterday we had a wind and rain storm that took us out off the electric power grid for over 24 hours.  So we were forced to unplug.  Time went slowly.  Projects got canceled. We endured and did some things that helped us cope.   We had no cooking ability, no water from our well, no heat from our boiler, no internet from our computers, no light from our lamps.   All because we are dependent on electric power to do all these things.  Everything we do in our normal day requires power.

So I had time to think.  We had time to talk.  We read by flash light, and we prayed.  Not all bad by any means.

Among the thoughts I had was the observation that some people live without power all the time.  And in much worse conditions as well. They have never had power, so whether it comes or goes, it makes no difference to them.  It wasn't long before I began to see a parrible here concerning the power of the Holy Spirit. We are able so get so much more accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit than we can possibly do without it.  We have light to walk in through the power of the Spirit.  The wellsprings of life flow through the power of the Spirit.  Life time assignments are known and accomplished through the power of the Spirit.  We are warmed and comforted through the power of the Spirit.  And we are able to flow together in the goodness of the Lord through the power of the Spirit.

If we don't know about His power, we could live without it and not really know what we are missing.  But once we have tasted and partaken, we can't live without Him.  Oh, we can put in our time doing religious things, trying to feel good about ourselves through our works, even getting use to stumbling around in the darkness, but there is no comparison to the genuine life that flows out of the power of the Holy Spirit working mightly in us and for us and through us.

I am glad to be back on the electric grid where the power flows, but I am all the more thankful for being on God's Holy Spirit grid, that flows all the time as we respond to Him.  How about you?   Let's stay plugged in.  Or if needful, let's get plugged in and filled up.  God is ready to empower us with the power of His Holy Spirit.
