In Search of Significance

God created us to live a meaningful and significant life.
This is why we all have a desire to somehow be important, do something important or live a meaningful life. When we live a mundane, aimless, meaningless existence, our soul withers to a place of dissatisfaction and frustration. But we blossom and soar when we are given purpose, meaning, and significance; something to live for, hope for, plan for and die for.

  • That God intends us for us to live significant lives is good news!
  • That God has given us the way to do it is great news!
  • That God enables us to do it is life changing news!

This is why it is unfortunate that so many of us look in all the wrong places for significance. Jesus says in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". We don’t need to look anywhere else for significance. In fact, if coming to the Father through Jesus is not the source and reason for our life, then nothing else will even come close to filling the bill.

  1. Trying to be something we are not to make up for what we are not.
  2. Obtaining the status and symbols of this world (possessions, being rich in this worlds goods; titles; positions of importance; approval resulting from our works).
  3. Self importance – the creating of our own self image.
  4. Controlling others or being in power.
  5. Impressing others – the pride approach

As Christians our significance is established through:

  1. Who we are in Christ Jesus and who He is in us (our place and relationship with the Lord). John 17:22-23; Ephesians 1:6
  2. Who we know and how we fit with who we know (our place and relationships in the body of Christ). Ephesians 4:15-16
  3. What we are created for, called to be, and anointed and gifted to fulfill as God’s new creation. 2 Timothy 1:9; 2 Peter 1:10

A Prayer
Lord, help us all to live the meaningful lives that you have called us to live.

Forgive us for going about seeking to establish our own righteous significance.

Reveal to us who we really are called in your sight, and it will be good enough to be as you see us.

Bring us to a new understanding of your plans and purposes in our lives so that we may fulfill them.

We believe you will satisfy our souls longing to let our lives count for something that makes our lives worth living.

We thank you for significant lives in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
